Nutrition and DNA: What Nutrigenomics Can (and Can't) Tell You

Nutrition and DNA, the field called nutrigenomics, studies how your genes shape the way your body handles food. It can reliably tell you a few things (whether you tolerate lactose, how fast you clear caffeine, whether a folate variant affects you) and it nudges many others. But it cannot prescribe a perfect "genetic diet." It's a personalisation tool, and honesty about its limits matters.
What nutrigenomics actually is
Small differences in your DNA change how you digest, absorb and use nutrients. A nutrition genetics test reads specific variants and translates them into tendencies, for example, that you likely clear caffeine slowly, or that you may need to pay a little more attention to folate.
The honest framing is important. For a handful of traits the science is solid. For many others, the evidence is still emerging, and any provider claiming your DNA dictates one exact diet is overselling. Think of nutrigenomics as fine-tuning, not a blueprint.

Lactose tolerance
Adult lactose intolerance is common across South Asia. A variant near the lactase gene predicts whether you likely keep digesting dairy into adulthood, one of the clearest, best-established gene-nutrient links.
Caffeine metabolism
Variants in CYP1A2 separate "fast" from "slow" caffeine metabolisers. Slow metabolisers feel caffeine longer and may do better limiting late-day chai or coffee. The evidence is reasonable, not absolute.
Folate and MTHFR
The MTHFR variant, common in many South Asians, can reduce how efficiently your body processes folate. This is relevant before and during pregnancy and for general B-vitamin balance. It's a tendency to discuss with a doctor, not a reason to self-prescribe high-dose supplements.
Vitamin needs
Some variants tilt you toward lower vitamin D, B12 or iron. This is genuinely useful in a country where vegetarian diets are widespread and B12 and iron deficiency are common, but genetics is only one input alongside actual blood levels.
What nutrigenomics can't tell you
- The one "correct" diet. No test can prescribe this. Your microbiome, activity, culture and food access matter as much as genes.
- Exact quantities. Genetics gives direction, not "eat exactly 18g of X."
- A shortcut past blood tests. For vitamins and iron, measured levels beat predicted tendencies.
- Weight-loss miracles. Be sceptical of "DNA diet" weight-loss promises, the evidence for gene-matched diets outperforming sensible eating is weak.

- Largely plant-based diets raise the importance of B12, iron and sometimes vitamin D, areas where genetic tendencies add useful nuance.
- The MTHFR variant is relatively common in South Asians and matters especially around pregnancy.
